Police uncover heroin lab in Grays Ferry

GRAYS FERRY (WPVI) -- Philadelphia Police and federal officials have been on the scene all day where they say they busted a heroin operation.

On 28th street where many families make their home and kids play openly in the street, a full functioning heroin lab has been uncovered.

"Around 6 a.m. Friday, I was woken up by constant banging, and I heard police. They were screaming to get in," Wayne Berkins of Grays Ferry said.

Since then we've seen investigators remove bag after bag of evidence.

We are told heroin, cash and possibly guns were found.

Action News spoke with a neighbor named Dawn.

Like so many we spoke with today, she's sick at the fact someone has brought this into their block.

"It's pathetic. It's very pathetic, you need to know who you live next door to," Dawn said.

She hopes this can also give others the confidence to report suspicious behavior to police.

"I hope that everyone knows this shouldn't be allowed. You say no to drugs and get them out of your community," Dawn said.

Action News was there when teams had to be covered head to toe in hazmat suits.

Investigators say most heroin now is laced with the opioid.

If it even makes contact with their skin they could overdose.

There is no word from Police on who lives there.

Neighbors say children were inside when the raid went down.

"Yes children lived in there. They brought them out today. Two kids are over at CHOP," Dawn said.

Authorities say it was a precaution to take the kids to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
