Family seeks justice for man killed on his birthday

A birthday is supposed to be a time for joy and celebration not heartache and tragedy. Now on this one year anniversary, a murder victim's family hopes justice will be served.

Victim's brother Travis Lyals said, "He was very outgoing, very out spoken. He would give anyone he considered a friend anything."

Travis Lyals says that good nature makes his brother, Herbert's murder that much more puzzling.

"He wouldn't hurt anyone or anybody, that's the biggest thing that has us confused," Travis said.

On Tuesday July 26, 2016 Herbert was at his cousin's house along the 5600 block of Truman Street in Bristol.

Travis says at about 9 p.m., Herbert called him.

"He called me actually around 9 p.m. and told me that somebody tried to rob him and put a gun to him." Travis said.

Little did Travis know that just about four hours later at 12:45 a.m. Herbert would be killed.

"They said he received a phone call when he walked outside, he heard two gunshots," added Travis.

Police found the 38-year-old dead on the sidewalk.

"He was murdered on his birthday, the 27th was his birthday," Travis said.

The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

"For him to be the person that he was like I said, wouldn't hurt anyone, for someone to do this to him, our family, his children, I feel like deserves justice," Travis said.
