Police-involved shooting near block party in North Philadelphia

NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating police-involved shooting near a block party in North Philadelphia.

It happened around 11 p.m. Saturday on the 2500 block of North Alder Street where a neighborhood party was taking place.

Police say 22nd district bicycle officers were on duty when a sergeant saw a man standing on the sidewalk with a gun in his hand.

The sergeant got off his bike and ordered the man to "drop the gun."

Police say the man ran into an alley with the sergeant in pursuit.

The sergeant, holding a flashlight, then saw the man raise the gun in his direction.

Police say the sergeant drew his service weapon and fired four rounds striking the man in the leg and right side.

A witness told Action News he did not see the man, who he says is his friend, aim at the officers.

"My friend was giving up with his hands up and he shot him. He started shooting and you know how you knew he wasn't just shooting just to shoot, cause he shot once, took his time, and shot three more times," the witness said.

The man's semi-automatic pistol loaded with ten rounds was recovered in the alley.

Police say the gun was reported stolen from Clearfield, Pa. on October 13. 2016.

The 38-year-old man was taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.

There were no injuries to police or other civilians.
