Workers tied up and robbed: Tamala Edwards reports during Action News at 6 a.m. on September 5, 2017.

MAYFAIR (WPVI) -- Some employees of a Family Dollar Store in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia were tied up and robbed at gunpoint.

Police say the thief hid inside the store in the 7300 block of Frankford Avenue until the employees started closing up for the night.

Then, around 11 p.m. Monday, he forced both of the employees into the store bathroom, zip-tied their wrists and locked them inside.

"The employees were able to free themselves from the zip-ties and bathroom," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told Action News. "$5,000 and cell phones were taken during the robbery."

The suspect got away through a back door.

The employees say the suspect tried to destroy the store's surveillance equipment but they don't think he was successful.

None of the employees were seriously injured.
