An 8-year-old girl was killed, an adult and three small children were injured after a car crashed into a utility pole in Monroe Township.

MONROE TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- An 8-year-old girl was killed, an adult and three small children were injured after a car crashed into a utility pole in Monroe Township, New Jersey.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Friday on Winslow Road near Lebanon Avenue.

Police say the driver of a Chevy Cruz, identified as 31-year-old Sheronda Smith, lost control of her vehicle before crashing into the pole.

An 8-year-old, who was the only one wearing a seat belt at the time, was pronounced dead.

Police say the three other children, ranging in age from 1-7, were not properly restrained.

No word on the extent of their injuries but they were taken to Cooper Trauma Hospital in stable condition.

The driver was also taken to the hospital for undisclosed injuries. Authorities say she was also not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

No word what caused the driver to lose control.

The accident is under investigation.
