Man in custody after barricade situation in West Philadelphia ID'd

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A barricade situation ended with SWAT officers raiding a house, a suspect shot several times, and a woman authorities say he shot also in the hospital.

This all began with a 911 call of a disturbance and screaming at a home in the 200 block of South Millick Street at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

When police knocked on the door to talk to a woman inside. She told police her brother Kadeem Nelson allegedly assaulted her mother.

Officers say Nelson then emerged from the kitchen and opened fire.

A bullet struck the woman at the door in the arm.

"Gunfire erupted almost immediately at the police. They wisely took cover outside. That male actually discharged again when they got outside, and then they returned fire. But in terms of what this was about, we do not know," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross.

The 28-year-old woman was able to run away, and was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in stable condition.

Police say Nelson then fired again at the officers, and they returned fire, striking Nelson multiple times.

Nelson then retreated inside the house armed with the gun.

Police negotiated through the suspect's mother before eventually going in.

Nelson was taken into custody and then taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment

There were two other adults and four children inside, but no one was hurt.
