CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Nearly 15 months after a Mother's Day shooting claimed the life of a Camden man, a family in mourning is still hoping for justice.

Rayshine Burks' family remembers him as having a big heart.

"If you didn't have anything and he had a bed, he would allow you to sleep in his bed, if he had a dollar and you needed something to eat, he would give you that dollar," said Norman Alston, uncle.

Burks' mother says her son was very excited to give her his Mother's Day gift.

However instead of that gift, Cheri Burks got the call that her son had been shot.

"This is what I got for Mother's Day," she said.

At about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday May 12, 2013, police were called to the scene outside the Center Food Market at Henry and Royden Streets in Camden.

There they found a car crashed into a tree.

24-year-old Burks was inside, shot multiple times. He died at the hospital.

"They said he dropped a young lady off and right after that the detective told me that they ambushed my son," said Cheri.

Police say he was actually shot several blocks away, and tried to drive away, but crashed instead.

Cheri says her was dealing drugs and isn't sure if that's what led to his death.

Surveillance cameras in the area were working at the time but police need more.

"You don't have the right to kill," said Cheri.

The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

All you have to do is make an anonymous call to 215-546-TIPS (8477).

Since her son's death, Cheri has created an outlet for her grief.

"I started the organization United Mothers Stand for grieving mothers that's dealing, trying to deal with the loss of their loved one," she said.
