HAMILTON TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A head-on collision involving two dump trucks shut down a busy Atlantic County highway Wednesday morning.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday on Route 50 at South County Boulevard in Hamilton Township.

The trucks were traveling to and from the road paving construction site on Route 30 in Egg Harbor City, police said.

Investigators said the truck driven by 28-year-old Lionell Powell of Millville collided in the intersection with a truck driven by 35-year-old Shawn Virgillo of Bridgeton.

Powell was trapped in the truck and had to be rescued from the vehicle. Both he and Virgillo suffered moderate injuries.

A hazardous materials team was called in to clean up fuel that spilled onto the road.

Images from the Action Cam showed crews off-loading material that was being transported by one of the trucks.

Route 50 was closed for about five hours, but has since reopened.

Both vehicles were contracted by Seashore Asphalt, police said.
