LOWER TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A couple doing landscaping at their home in Lower Township made a frightening discovery: a live explosive in their backyard.

The cannonball-like object was discovered along the 200 block of West Bates Avenue on Saturday.

The couple called police who sent out the Atlantic City police bomb squad.

Authorities x-rayed the 'cannonball' and determined that it was actively explosive.

They took it away and detonated it in an unpopulated area.

Officials say while it's not uncommon to find military ordinance in that area, folks should never touch or move it.
