EGG HARBOR TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A small girl was hit by a car in the driveway of a home in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey on Tuesday.

The accident happened at a home on Flatbush Avenue near New Jersey Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

Police tell Action News that a child, who is just over a year old, was run over as her mother, 23-year-old Christina Rodriguez, was backing out.

The child was trapped under the car, so neighbors rushed over and lifted up the car to free the girl.

"I just heard people screaming, so I came outside to see what happened - I had the door open - and from here I could see everybody was on the car. So I went to help and we lifted up the car and got the baby out," said Elizabeth Carieon.

"We believe the child maybe ran in back of the car and we believe the child was playing in the side yard and got in the way of the car. It appears to be a tragic accident," said Lt. R. Gray of the Egg Harbor Twp. Police.

The girl was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital. Her mother flew with the child.

Police said the girl suffered 'moderate' injuries.

"We have amazing residents in Egg Harbor Township who always want to get involved and help their neighbors, so kudos to them," said Lt. Gray.

An investigation into this incident continues.
