Elderly man dead in Havertown house fire

Authorities are investigating a fire in Havertown, Pa.

HAVERTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- An elderly man has died after a house fire in Havertown, Delaware County.

The fire broke out around 10 a.m. Monday in the 500 block of Strathmore Road.

Arriving police officers attempted to enter the home to check for anyone inside, but were driven back by heavy smoke conditions.

Firefighters were able to gain entry and located an elderly man on the first floor.

He was transported to Lankenau Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

Chopper 6 was over the scene of this house fire in Havertown, Pa.

The view from Chopper 6 HD showed a large column of smoke rising above the neighborhood.

Officials say the home sustained heavy damage.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The investigation is being conducted by the Haverford Township Police Department with the assistance of both the Delaware County Detectives and the PA State Fire Marshall Office.
