LOWER MERION TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A son was attacked with a hammer after authorities say he and his father confronted a home invasion suspect in Lower Merion, Montgomery County.

It happened at a home in the 200 block of Edge Hill Road around 4 a.m. Sunday.

The homeowner and his son confronted the home invader and the suspect attacked the son with a hammer, striking him several times.

Next door neighbor Sam Miller heard a commotion that woke him up.

"Shouting, angry, afraid at the same time. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but it was coming through the wall very clearly," Miller said.

The son was treated at an area hospital for his injuries and released.

Police have not made any arrests. They believe there was a getaway car waiting in the alley behind the home.

At one point in the morning, police returned and left with a woman in custody.

Neighbors, meanwhile, are waiting for more information.

"We're upset, but we're more concerned about them," said Miller.

Police continue to investigate.
