Man Died Taking Bullets for Mother in Shooting, Family Says
A Chicago man died shielding his mother in a shooting in a south Chicago neighborhood, his family said.
James Jones' relatives told ABC station WLS-TV that Jones, 21, took the bullets for his mother, Alicia, 46, as shots were fired.
A shooting happened around noon Saturday, when an unknown male fired two shots, a Chicago Police Department spokesman told ABC News today.
Though a police spokesman declined to confirm the names of the victims, he did say that a 21-year-old man was found dead on the scene and that a female, age 46, was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.
The victims were outside when the "unknown male suspect" exited through an alleyway between houses, the spokesman said, adding that an investigation is ongoing and that no one is in custody in connection to the shooting.
No additional information was immediately available.
James is the third child Alicia has lost to violence, WLS reported.
In 2006, her daughter Antoinette Means was fatally shot at her job as a manager of a KFC, WLS said, adding that in 1994, Jones' 4-year-old son was killed when someone tossed a Molotov cocktail through a window of her home.
