SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A shooting victim has died and one man was taken into custody after a police chase and crash in South Philadelphia.

Police say it started at a private party at the American Legion Post 153 on the 2400 block of Passyunk Avenue.

A fight in the parking lot around 2:40 a.m. Saturday ended with a 23-year-old man shot.

He was found in the passenger's seat of a Nissan Tundra with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he later died.

The owner of the vehicle told police they were talking to the suspect across the parking lot when he fired several shots, striking the victim.

Several cars were also riddled with bullets, police say.

Officers spotted a car speeding away and gave chase.

The driver crashed the vehicle after exiting the Schuylkill Expressway at University Avenue.

He was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered, police say.

So far, no word on charges.
