VIDEO: Obama crashes wedding
A groom from New Jersey and his bride were surprised to find the president at their wedding location.

BRICK TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- President Obama has offered his apologies to a young couple who had to move their wedding ceremony, all because of the president's golf game.

It's not often you get President Obama on speaker phone.

But it can happen if the president's golf game interrupts your wedding.

"Listen, congratulations on your wedding. I feel terrible. Nobody told us," the president said to the couple.

Both are U.S. Army captains stationed in Hawaii.

They planned to marry on the 16th hole of a golf course there, but had to switch locations at the last minute because the president planned to play a round of golf with friends.

Natalie told the president, "It was just above the 16th hole. So we were watching you golf."

Obama replied, "Well, that must have been kind of painful."

The groom, Captain Ed Mallue, is from Brick Township, New Jersey.

He's an All-American soccer player who loves golf and served a tour in Afghanistan.

Action News spoke to his mom Robin Mallue who's still in Hawaii with the family celebrating her son's wedding.

"Yes, they did have to change location in a few hours, but they managed to get another venue that was just as pretty and scenic as the first one. And the president calling at the end of the ceremony was so nice and we were all very pleased and had a great day," Robin said.

The story has gained national attention.

It isn't every bride and groom who get a call from the president.

"We didn't realize what was going on until we saw the name and then we look it's Ed Mallue. We couldn't believe it was Ed's son," neighbor Art Calabro said.

"The family was thrilled; they're so excited, it really made their day. But the plans went off, the bride and groom are happily married and they are having a great time," family friend Diane Crowe said.

"I think if the president knew - he sort of hits me as a romantic - and I think if he knew, he would have been like 'leave those kids alone,'" the sister of a neighbor, Lisa Piccolo, said.

President Obama was back on the links Monday - but on a different course. It was his seventh round of golf during his Hawaiian vacation, and as far as we know, this time no wedding plans were ruined.

Along with President Obama's apology, he joked about his golf game, and even got invited to the couple's open bar reception, which he declined.

He's not quite a wedding crasher, but the president's golf game did disrupt the ceremony turning it into a day the couple will truly never forget.
