MILL CREEK, Del. (WPVI) -- A man has died after being struck in a hit-and-run in Mill Creek, Delaware.

Police identified the victim Friday night as 53-year-old Christopher Hess of Wilmington.

It happened just before 9 p.m. Thursday on the westbound Kirkwood Highway west of Greenbank Road.

Police say Hess was trying to pick up something from the roadway when he was struck by a male driver who sped away.

After the first car hit Hess, police say a second car then hit him.

But that driver, a 56-year-old woman, stayed at the scene.

And for many in Mill Creek, news of a man being hit by two cars was heartbreaking. But learning the first driver never bothered to stop was maddening.

"Just leave him, then someone else hits him. Where's the empathy anymore? There is none," said Bob Battineri of Bear.

The victim was treated at the scene and then taken to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Hess was dressed in dark clothing and not using the crosswalk.

Authorities don't yet have a description of the striking vehicle.

The westbound lanes were closed for about two hours while police investigated.

Police are searching for the suspect who left the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call 302-365-8486.
