A person was struck and killed on Roosevelt Boulevard.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A man was struck and killed on Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia Monday morning.



The fatal accident happened around 5:30 a.m. on the Boulevard near Harbison Avenue.



Police believe the pedestrian darted in front of oncoming traffic as he tried to get to the other side of the Boulevard.



According to authorities, the driver had the green light and swerved to avoid the pedestrian in the southbound inner lane, but the left side of his Volvo clipped the victim then crossed the median.



Witnesses say the driver is a local doctor and immediately stopped, called 911 and ran to help the victim, but medics pronounced him dead at the scene.



Neighbor Shuchi Misra woke up to the violent crash.



"The sound of the accident went boom!" Misra said.



For 12 years, Misra has seen numerous accidents at the intersection. She saw several people run to help the man as he lay on the roadway hoping he would be OK.



"Every ten days, there is an accident., but this is the first time I saw somebody dying here," Misra said.

The accident caused a traffic nightmare for several hours as police funneled vehicles through side streets while they gathered evidence and witness accounts.



All southbound lanes were shut down after a pedestrian was struck and killed on Roosevelt Boulevard.


The driver was not injured.



The victim's identity has not been released as police work to notify the victim's family.
