A Philadelphia high school student has been taken into custody after police found a handgun in his backpack.

HUNTING PARK (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia high school student has been taken into custody after police found a handgun in his backpack.

It happened around 9 a.m. Thursday at the Randolph Career Academy, located on the 3100 block of Henry Avenue in Hunting Park.

Police were called to the school after officials say they found a loaded gun in the male student's bag.

"He went through the scanning process where school police discovered the weapon. They immediately secured the weapon, secured the student. Philadelphia police were called. The school was placed on lockdown," Philadelphia Police Inspector Fancis Bachmayer said.

The lockdown was lifted after a search for more weapons came up empty.

The teen was taken in for more questioning.

A spokesman for the school released the following statement Thursday:

"Randolph Technical High School was placed on lockdown immediately after a loaded gun was found at the school Thursday morning. The lockdown has been lifted after it was determined that there was no further threat and all students and staff are safe. The School District is working in cooperation with the Philadelphia Police Department and all District procedures and protocols are being followed with regard to this matter."
