Parents praised the school but are outraged by the violence.

NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Crime tape, bullet holes and shell casings - it's the scene no parent wants to see near their child's school. But Philadelphia police confirm that was the reality outside of KIPP Charter School on Monday.

Shots rang out while children were playing on the playground. Teachers yelled for them to take cover until they could get inside to safety.

We went back to the neighborhood school today in North Philadelphia. The shooting happened on Park Street and detectives tell us that street is the dividing line of a drug war and KIPP is in the middle of it.

Parents praised the school but are outraged by the violence.

Harvey Jones says, "It's a terrible thing to happen around a school as great as this school is. No one's safe anymore."

Neighbor Wanda Jones tells us, "They never hit who they planned to hit, they just start shooting like crazy. Everybody that does that should get the fullest extent of the law. My kids go here."

And Latesha Bumpas says, "They acting a fool for no reason. This is our neighborhood school. Kipp is for our neighborhood, so to come around here and go... hey all this is uncalled for."

Thankfully none of the children were hurt in the shootings, but parents say they see questionable groups of people hanging on the corners near the school every morning. And now some are calling for an increased police presence.

The Philadelphia Police Department tells Action News at this time there are no plans to beef up patrols in that area.
