PORT RICHMOND (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say a dispute between neighbors, and a threat involving a shovel, led to gunfire in the Port Richmond section of the city.

Gunfire rang out just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 2100 block of East Ann Street.

Police say it started when a 31-year-old man threatened his 66-year-old neighbor with a shovel.

The older man retaliated by getting a handgun and opening fire once, hitting his neighbor in the stomach, police said.

Investigators say the 66-year-old man also pointed the weapon at a woman who was at the scene. She retreated inside a home and was not hurt.

The 31-year-old man was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition. He was expected to survive.

The alleged gunman remained on the scene and surrendered to arriving officers.

He was taken into custody. Investigators recovered a gray handgun with a black handle.

There was no immediate word if the alleged gunman will be charged.
