Police: Woman falls asleep while smoking, dies in Trenton apartment fire

Officials said a 75-year-old woman who fell asleep while smoking died in a fire at a senior living facility in Trenton, New Jersey.

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- Officials said a 75-year-old woman who fell asleep while smoking died in a fire at a senior living facility in Trenton, New Jersey.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. Thursday at the Luther Arms building located in the 300 block of South Broad Street.

Upon arrival, officials said the wheelchair-bound woman was found dead inside a unit on the 6th floor, where the fire broke out.

The fire was put out with a fire extinguisher.

The woman apparently fell asleep while smoking, officials said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Seven other residents were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials say it appears to be the result of careless smoking.

All residents have been allowed to return home.
