A field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo never happened for a group of pre-schoolers because their bus crashed into a barrier on the Schuylkill Expressway.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A school bus full of preschool students crashed into a barrier on the Schuylkill Expressway Thursday morning.

The crash occurred just before 10:00 a.m. in the eastbound lanes approaching Girard Avenue.

Fire crews arrived to find the bus full of small children. They helped the children off the back of the bus on the side of the highway.

Some adults then helped the kids onto a new bus that arrived at the scene.

The children were preschoolers from Hope Church School, located at 6707 Old York Rd in Philadelphia. They were on their way to the Philadelphia Zoo for a field trip when the accident happened.

All of the kids were taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for evaluation.

State police are investigating.
