Search for suspect in burglaries at 6 West Chester homes

WEST CHESTER (WPVI) -- Residents in West Chester are on high alert as police search for the suspect or suspects that targeted half a dozen homes in burglaries taking place from March through May.

"Hopefully they catch him. Please catch him. Somebody catch him," said Crystal Jacobs of West Chester.

"It has scared the daylights out of me," said Lisa Diprospero of West Chester. "Across the street, our neighbors were robbed and their car was stolen, and it was 4 o' clock in the morning and we were at home in bed."

Police believe the bold burglar is acting alone, and strikes during the hours of 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. - while people are at home.

In each case, the victim's have had their doors and windows locked. So far, no one has been hurt or come face to face with the burglar.

By the time they realize their home has been broken into, police say the crook is long gone.

"It is fortunate that it doesn't appear the suspect or suspects want a confrontation," said West Chester Police Sgt. Lou DeShullo.

Police want to make an arrest before anyone is hurt.

The deceptive burglar has not only broken into homes and stolen purses, wallets, phones and electronics, but four cars were also taken and eventually recovered.

"We do believe the suspect knows the West Chester Borough very well," said DeShullo.

The crimes have rattled the community's sense of safety, and many residents, like Diprospero, say they are increasing security at their homes.

"I'm concerned that their not going to be caught," said Diprospero. "We are now keeping all of our blinds closed. We just ordered a security system, which should arrive by 2:30 today, so we're doing everything we can."

Police say none of the homes targeted had their alarms activated. We can also tell you there is no surveillance capturing that burglar or burglars.

Residents are encouraged to be on high alert, and to notify police of any suspicious activity.
