Charles Manson has reportedly called off his engagement to his devoted fan after discovering that she planned to display his corpse for profit.

Afton Elaine Burton, 27, also known as Star, made national headlines last year when she announced her engagement to convicted serial killer and cult leader.

The New York Post reports that Burton was hoping that she would gain possession of Manson's corpse through marriage so she and cohorts could put it on display in Los Angeles as a tourist attraction.

Journalist Daniel Simone said Burton and her friend, Craig Hammond, planned to put Manson's body on display in a glass crypt, hoping to draw big crowds and gain a fortune.

"He's finally realized that he's been played for a fool," Simone said.

Simone went on to explain that Manson balked at the idea of his corpse being on display because he genuinely believes he's immortal.

"He feels he will never die," Simone said. "Therefore, he feels it's a stupid idea to begin with."

Manson and Burton's marriage license expired last week, though "They plan on renewing the license, and things will move forward in the coming months," Burton said in a web statement. She also claimed that the wedding was postponed "due to an unexpected interruption in logistics."

Burton's corpse-on-display concept is similar to already existing attractions, including Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow, where visitors since 1926 may see Russian communist leader Vladimir Lenin's embalmed body.
