SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A man is in critical condition after being shot behind the wheel then driving himself to a police station in Southwest Philadelphia.

It happened before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say a 22-year-old man was sitting in his Chevrolet Malibu at 66th and Paschall Streets when someone opened fire.

Multiple bullets hit the vehicle, and the victim was shot in the chest.

Investigators say the man hit the gas and drove straight to the nearby Philadelphia Police 12th District headquarters.

A police sergeant walking into the district saw the vehicle approach.

The victim said he had been shot. The sergeant took him out of the car, put in him in a police car and drove him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

"While the sergeant was driving the victim to the hospital, he initially was conscious and then he became unconscious," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told Action News.

The man was taken into surgery and listed in very critical condition.

Witnesses told police this was not a random shooting, Action News has learned, and the victim was talking to the gunman for some time before the shooting.

The gunman opened fire after the victim started leaving in his vehicle, those witnesses said.

The suspect was last seen driving a newer model black or dark-colored Dodge Charger.
