Police thought they were responding to a home invasion call. Instead they found themselves in a firefight.

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- One man was killed in a shootout with Trenton Police Thursday morning.

It was around 7:00 a.m. when officers responded to a home on Wilson Street for a report of a suspect with a gun.

When they arrived police say the man opened fire before the officers even got out of their vehicle.

Trenton Police Lt. Mark Kieffer explains, "They're coming down street, they see the suspect... the suspect opened fire on their vehicle. They returned fire."

Bullets pierced the windshield of the police SUV.

The suspect was taken to the hospital. He died from his injuries.

At least one of the officers was saved by his body armor. Both officers were taken to the hospital for evaluation and are expected to be just fine, but they are shaken up.

Afterwards, Trenton police and the prosecutor's office combed the scene.

The identities of the suspect or the officers involved have not been released.
