TOMS RIVER, N.J. (WPVI) -- Officials say a suspect was shot in Toms River, New Jersey while police were investigating a suspicious vehicle.

It happened around midnight Friday on the 100 block of Cedar Drive and Haines Drive.

Officers arrived and approached the vehicle and made contact with 29-year-old Timothy Sauers.

Police say during the interaction, the suspect suddenly exited the vehicle, and allegedly pulled a gun on the officers.

The encounter ended with the suspect shot and wounded. He then jumped into the Toms River.

Police conducted a search for the suspect. Tactical teams found him an hour later.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

No officers were hurt during the incident.

Sauers was sentenced to five years in jail in 2009 after pleading guilty to death by auto for a crash that killed a 7-year-old girl.

Prosecutors said he ran a red light while involved in a phone dispute with his girlfriend.
