A Philadelphia police officer opened fire on a man who authorities say approached the officer with a gun in his hand in the Frankford section late Thursday night.

FRANKFORD (WPVI) -- A suspect is hospitalized after being shot and wounded by police in the Frankford section of Philadelphia.

The incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Akron Street near Pratt Street.

Police say two officers were responding to a report of shots fired and arrived to find a large crowd in the area.

They say as they pulled up an armed man approached them carrying two guns, one in his hand and the other tucked in his waistband.

The officers got of the patrol car and told the suspect to drop the weapon.

Police say the suspect refused, and one officer fired once, striking the suspect in the left leg.

The man was rushed to Einstein Medical Center with stable vital signs.

Neither officer was hurt.

Investigators recovered the suspect's weapon at the scene.

They also found two shell casings at the original scene, indicating that some sort of shooting had taken place there prior to police arriving.

A full investigation is underway.
