SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One person was rescued after their vehicle plunged into Cobbs Creek in Southwest Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon.

Rescuers responded around 3:35 p.m. to the report of a vehicle into the water at Cobbs Creek Parkway and Greenway Avenue.

Family members tell Action News the 60-year-old woman behind the wheel suffered an apparent heart attack, causing her to lose control of the vehicle.

The SUV veered off the roadway and into the creek.

Civilians and police jumped into the water and pulled the driver from the wreckage.

Authorities say the vehicle had landed upside down, and that rescuers used all their might to turn the vehicle to free the woman inside.

Marcei Porter tells us, "Me and another guy, we took a rock and broke the glass. And I seen her feet in there dangling. So I didn't know if she was alive or had an air pocket or something but we just ... I just flipped into rescue mode. She was already unconscious. I pulled her out and we started giving her CPR. I know nothing about CPR."

She was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition, however, family members say she will pull through.

The family says they are grateful for all those who helped her.
