School officials have identified the Ursinus College student struck and killed near campus Thursday night.

Michelle Buck was a sophomore from Herndon, Virginia.

College officials say Buck had an interest in neuroscience and in philosophy. She was a Dean's List student who played in the school's string ensemble.

"It is tragic when we lose a member of the Ursinus family. Michelle was such a pleasant student who was well-liked and respected by her professors and her peers," said Ursinus College President Brock Blomberg in a statement. "Please join me in keeping her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. I encourage all of us to find comfort and support in one another during this trying time."

Action News has confirmed that a student at Ursinus College has been struck and killed near the school's campus in Montgomery County.

Buck was struck and killed at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday on Main Street near 6th Avenue in Collegeville.

Police say their initial investigation shows Buck was walking east on the Main Street sidewalk and had stepped into a crosswalk when she was hit by a Nissan Rogue SUV.

The Nissan was also traveling east. The driver did stop.

Police describe him as a local resident who is cooperating with the investigation.

Authorities say their investigation will include analysis of the driver's blood to determine whether any alcohol or controlled substances were involved.

Anyone with information about the incident was being asked to contact Collegeville Police at 610-489-9332.

Word that the victim was an Ursinus student came late Thursday on the school's Twitter account.

"We are saddened to report this evening's fatal accident involved an Ursinus student. More details to come," the school said in a tweet.

Joel Bish, associate professor of psychology, described Buck as a "delightful student" who was "quiet and unassuming, diligent and respectful."

Action News spoke with several students who said they were shocked and saddened by word of the death.

The incident happened as final exams are wrapping up at Ursinus.

The last exam before the winter break is scheduled for Saturday.

The school said counselors were on hand Friday, and would remain available over the winter break, for anyone in the campus community.
