Democrat Murphy calls GOP tax plan 'scam': John Rawlins reports on Action News at 5 p.m., November 13, 2017

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Democratic Gov.-elect Phil Murphy is calling GOP efforts to overhaul the nation's tax system a "scam."

Murphy spoke Monday in Newark alongside Democratic congressmen. His remarks came the same day Ivanka Trump and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin were in Berkeley Township to support the efforts.

Mnuchin and Trump said the Republican proposals would simplify the tax code and save about $1,000 a month for the "median" family of four. Republicans are also calling for reducing the number of tax brackets and lowering corporate rates.

A House bill would cap property cap deductions at $10,000. The Senate version would eliminate the deduction.

Murphy won election as New Jersey's next governor on Tuesday. He will succeed GOP Gov. Chris Christie, who was also in Berkeley Township Monday to support his party's effort on taxes.
