DNC brings big business for hotels, higher rates for tourists

CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- The Democratic National Convention means huge profits for many businesses in the area. Hotels will be a hot commodity, making it a win-win for just about everyone - except for tourists who are finding themselves priced out.

"We were supposed to be here for two days. We wanted to visit the area, but it was too much," said Peter M. of Montreal, Canada.

It's not often you hear a trip to the birthplace of America is simply too expensive. Even a spontaneous one.

Unfortunately, for Miriam Chauvin and her boyfriend, Peter, they chose one of the priciest weeks for a last-minute visit from Montreal, Canada.

"We're not staying because of the price," said Peter M.

Thousands of delegates, alternates and their guests will be staying at 57 Philadelphia hotels for the Democratic National Convention.

All but a few Center City hotels are either near capacity or sold out.

"Each individual hotel will set their rates based on supply and demand, just like any commodity," said Ed Grose, Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association.

A night at a hotel, say next Tuesday, will cost you at the very least 30 percent more than when there is no convention in town.

"That's way too much, that's way too much," said Peter M.

"If you compare Philadelphia to other cities in the Northeast, such as Boston, New York, Washington, if the convention were to take place in any of those cities, you would definitely see much higher rates than you are seeing for Philadelphia," said Grose.

And if you're using the papal visit as a guide for what rates to expect, don't bother.

Rates actually dipped because so many chose to stay away altogether, meaning lower demand, lower rates.

"There really isn't any comparison other than the fact that they're both blockbuster events," said Grose.

For the young, spontaneous couple it means going back home early and back to the drawing board.

"We will com back another time like with a planned budget," said Peter M.

There are a handful exceptions to the hotel rate increases. Action News is told several Center City hotels had last-minute party cancellations that have left them with a much higher number of vacancies.

As a result, their rates for next week are much more reasonable.
