SLAUGHTER BEACH, Del. (WPVI) -- A raging fire destroyed two homes and caused more than half a million dollars in damages in Sussex County, Delaware on Christmas night.

It started shortly after 7 p.m. Monday in Slaughter Beach along the 300 block of Bay Avenue near Beach Road.

The 4-alarm fire quickly spread to several homes.

Firefighters were eventually able to get the upper hand on the fire, but two houses were destroyed. Three other homes were damaged by exposure.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal says the damage is expected to exceed $500,000.

State fire investigators are on the scene searching for the fire's origin and cause.
