CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- More than 17,000 pilgrims from over 100 countries came together Tuesday for the World Meeting of Families.

The spiritual event kicked off with Mass at the Convention Center led by Archbishop Charles Chaput.

"We went to the Basilica today. It's beautiful. What a wonderful event. We're so happy to be here," said Sister Mary Johana of Nashville, Tennessee.

The World Meeting of Families is a triennial global event that seeks to strengthen the sacred bonds of family across the globe and highlight its intrinsic value to the good of society.

Organizers describe the conference that blends prayer, religious instruction and faith-themed lectures as the world's largest gathering of Catholic families.

In addition to the week-long event, people took the time to enjoy some of the city's main attractions including sidewalk cafes, City Hall and Love Park.

"It's really great, the people are so warm, they welcome us with their smiles," said Grace Panacuelles of British Colombia.

Many pilgrims said they plan to stay for the highlight of the week - the pope's visit to the city this weekend.
