TargetExpress opening in Center City Philadelphia in 2016
CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- Target is coming to Center City Philadelphia...sort of.
Back in February, Target Corp. announced it would open 15 new stores across the country including 8 TargetExpress stores.
The company confirmed to Action News one of those stores will open in July 2016 at 19th and Chestnut.
"The neighboring existing retail and lots of pedestrian traffic make this a great location for us, because we know it's an area where people are out and about on a daily basis," spokeswoman Erika Winkels said via email.
The location is where the historic Boyd Theater once stood. The theater was sold last October for $4.5 million.
TargetExpress stores are described as the retailer's newest and smallest format at approximately 20,000 square feet.
"TargetExpress is a flexible-format concept that allows us to more easily fit into a densely populated urban area and serve guests. The assortment also caters to an urban guest, because we know guests are walking, biking or taking mass transit to the store and not driving a car. For example, instead of carrying a 12-pack of paper towels, the store will carry smaller sizes, like a two-pack," Winkels said.
So what exactly can you expect when you walk into the Center City TargetExpress next summer?
Winkels said while assortment details aren't finalized, Target is doing extensive research and listening to their customers to "determine the right merchandise mix for the store."
The TargetExpress will feature apparel items, a home section with apartment and condo items, beauty merchandise, a tech department, as well as groceries.
"This community has indicated a need for a convenient grocery option, including large grab and go area with sandwiches, salads, and breakfast items like yogurt; and midday snacks, which will be located at the front of the store for busy professionals and weekend shoppers," Winkels said.
Customers can also order on Target.com and pick up their items at the store, Winkels said.
So this means if you live or work in Center City, you'll still have to travel outside for that full Target experience.
But next summer, if you're just in need for a quick errand before going to eat at the Center City Cheesecake Factory, the TargetExpress will not be too far away.
