Law Enforcement Memorial Run - 100 miles to honor fallen officers

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- They laced up their sneakers and hit the pavement, embarking on a 100 mile journey to honor our fallen heroes.

The Law Enforcement Memorial Run kicked off at Philadelphia's Navy Yard Thursday morning, and the runners will now travel across three states to our nation's capital.

They've come from all over the tristate area, even as far north as Canada. They are running for our men and women in blue who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Philadelphia Police Officer Jesse Hartnett was there for the send-off this morning.

Hartnett is still recovering after he was ambushed in the line of duty earlier this year. While he's obeying doctors' orders and NOT making the trek, he says the support means the world.

He says, "Showing support, it gives you faith in what you are doing. It's big shoes to fill - it's a big task. It's not easy and there are people who don't like the police, so when you get full support, it makes it a lot easier and more incentive to come out and do your job."

The runners will arrive in Washington DC by Sunday, which is the beginning of national police week.

As for Hartnett, he says he's feeling good. The road to recovery will be long, but he's on the mend and on his way.
