Eagles expected to hire Doug Pederson as head coach

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to hire Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson as their new head coach, Action News has learned.

The team has not made an official announcement as of yet, but have said their search for a new head coach is over.

The Eagles cannot make the announcement about Pederson until the Chiefs are out of the playoffs or the end of the season. They play the New England Patriots on Saturday.

Pederson spent four seasons as an offensive assistant under Andy Reid in Philadelphia from 2009 to 2012.

Pederson then followed Reid to Kansas City, where he has been the Chiefs' offensive coordinator since 2013.

Pederson, 47, also spent 10 years as a quarterback in the NFL, including the 1999 season in Philadelphia.

The Eagles are seeking a replacement for Chip Kelly, who was fired five days before Philadelphia's season-ending victory over the New York Giants.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie acknowledged that he fired Kelly before the season ended in order to start the process of finding a new coach.

Kelly was named the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday afternoon.

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin took his name out of the running for the Eagles position because it was "not the right fit," sources told ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
