Mets gets HRs from d'Arnaud and Duda to sweep Phillies, 6-1

NEW YORK -- There was the home opener a couple of days ago. Matt Harvey's return to Citi Field. And then the first game since David Wright got hurt.

The New York Mets rose to every occasion.

Travis d'Arnaud homered after assuming Wright's spot in the lineup, Lucas Duda also went deep and the Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 Wednesday night for a three-game sweep in their first home series this season.

"I look at today's game as a very big game for us with the loss of David," manager Terry Collins said. "I wanted to see how the guys came out. They came out this afternoon ready to go."

Jonathon Niese pitched out of trouble for 6 1/3 innings and helped himself with a run-scoring single.

Duda hit a long homer and an RBI double as the Mets won their fourth straight, matching their longest winning streak last year, a few hours after putting their captain on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

"We're going to go through a lot more adversity this year. This is just one speed bump in the road and we're going to be able to get through it. We've got a good team," Niese said. "We're going to be able to pick him up."

Wright was injured while stealing second base the night before and is expected back within three weeks. In his absence, d'Arnaud was bumped up to second in the batting order for the first time in his career and broke a 1-all tie in the third with a leadoff shot down the left-field line.

Saying he was fired up by a move that "meant the world" to him and kicked him into another gear, d'Arnaud explained: "It's nice to have Big Dude behind me."

Duda hit the first pitch in the fifth from Jerome Williams (0-1) over the original wall in right-center that is 415 feet from home plate at Citi Field. Juan Lagares had an RBI single, and the Mets got another run on a throwing error by third baseman Cody Asche.

Niese (1-0) worked around nine hits and two walks as the slumping Phillies had their latest miserable performance with runners in scoring position.

"He knows how to get outs when he needs them," Collins said.

Philadelphia has dropped four in a row overall and 20 of its past 26 meetings with the NL East rival Mets.

"It's going to come. It's still early. There's no need for us to panic and knee-jerk reactions, but we need a big hit. I think that would help us out," Asche said.

Phillies: OF Domonic Brown (left Achilles tendinitis) has been rehabbing with Class A Clearwater and is getting close to having his assignment moved to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. "I'm not sure if it's today or tomorrow. It could be that soon," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "The plan right now is to get some upper-level at-bats." ... RHP Chad Billingsley (elbow surgery) pitched five scoreless innings of two-hit ball Wednesday morning in a rehab start for Lehigh Valley against Syracuse. "Progressing well," Sandberg said.

Mets: Cleanup hitter Michael Cuddyer was back in the lineup after leaving Tuesday night's game when he was hit by a pitch on the left hand. ... New York closer Jeurys Familia was unavailable after earning three saves in three days. ... Eric Campbell was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace Wright at third base. Campbell singled in his first major league at-bat of the year.

Niese is 4-0 with a 1.87 ERA in his last six starts against Philadelphia, swept in a three-game series at Citi Field for the first time since May 2010.

"Nothing came easy," Niese said. "Our offense did a great job."

JACKIE ROBINSON DAY

Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson wore customized spikes in Brooklyn Dodgers colors with No. 42 and the letters JRD on the side. They will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
