Pole dancing one step closer to becoming an Olympic sport

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Gymnastics, diving, track and field....pole dancing?

It's one step closer to becoming an Olympic sport after the Global Association of International Sports Federation has officially recognized it as a provisional sport.

That checks off the first box to eventually qualifying as an Olympic event.

For those questioning it's status as a sport, consider this from those who train. They say it takes athleticism, strength, poise and agility, just like any other sport.

The president of the International Pole Sports Federation called the new designation an historical day for Pole Sports and its athletes.

She says they're excited for the future and the potential prospect of one day going for the gold.

It could take years, but this is the first step in the right direction.
