One person is dead after a car slammed into a utility pole and caught fire in Salem County.

ELMER, N.J. (WPVI) -- New Jersey State Police say one person was killed in a fiery, single-vehicle crash in Elmer, Salem County.

It happened before 8:30 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Route 77 and Shirley Road.

Images from Chopper 6 HD showed a white sedan which appeared to have struck a utility pole and burst into flames.

The wooden utility pole had been split in half, and the burned wreckage of the car was wrapped around part of the pole.

There was no immediate word on the identity of the driver, or what led the crash.

Route 77 was shut down in both directions as police investigated.
