PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Thousands of Philadelphia students were dismissed at noon on Tuesday because of the heat, but several high schools still held their graduation ceremonies.

At Roxborough High School it was a very happy surprise when they walked in the door Tuesday morning.

Student Anthony Furlow said he came to school "Thinking it was going to be a full day and it wasn't."

Over at the Dell Music Center, Overbrook High School seniors were adding a cap and gown to today's wardrobe, but they didn't mind.

Excitement was certainly on the forefront of many parents' minds as they watched their children graduate, but the heat and humidity were hard to ignore.

"I was worried about the heat and the rain, little bit nervous but we're proud, third in his class," said mom Valerie Conrow.

As proud families basked in the glow of their new graduates and the sun, many came prepared with umbrellas and bottles of water.

They stuck to the shade when they could, but mostly just enjoyed the accomplishments of these young men and women who graduated today.

One grandmother, Vanessa Smith said, "We would have been here if it was 102 because this was a great day."
