Cristian Custodio-Aquino, 28, pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder in the death of Dr. Michael Anthony, 45.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Custodio-Aquino is expected to be sentenced to 30 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for July 9, 2026.
"I commend the outstanding work of the detectives and prosecutors whose persistence and commitment to justice were instrumental in identifying and locating the defendant in California months after Dr. Anthony's death," said Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay in a statement on Wednesday.
Dr. Anthony was found stabbed around 7:09 a.m. on December 10, 2024, outside his home in the 100 block of Sharrowvale Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said a pair of sunglasses found near the victim's body was later traced to Custodio-Aquino. Authorities also used license plate reader data to place his Nissan Altima in the area on the day of the killing and later tracked the vehicle to Florida and California.
Prosecutors said Dr. Anthony's blood was found inside the suspect's vehicle.
Custodio-Aquino was arrested by U.S. Marshals on February 11, 2025, in California.
In court, prosecutors said Dr. Anthony had been dating the defendant's ex-boyfriend, which may have been a motive in the case.
