Get your drink cozies and cheetos ready, because the NFL regular season is here again. But as anticipation runs high for the huge flurry of games this weekend, don't forget that theres a lot of riveting stories shaping up during the offseason. Here are the 7 main talking points you need to know about the 2014 NFL season, and a full schedule of every NFL team.
Michael Sam
Michael Sam was a star defensive end for the Missouri Tigers. After his college football career came to a close, Sam publicly came out as gay, receiving high media attention for his potential to be the first openly gay player in the NFL. Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams but cut shortly after the preseason. Sam's drafting was widely heralded, even with President Obama remarking on Sam being a huge step forward in the NFL. September 3rd, Sam signed with the Dallas Cowboys practice squad. This doesn't mean though that Sam will actually play a regular season game for the Cowboys, but there will still be constant attention on the player throughout the coming weeks.
Domestic Violence
After Ray Rice was caught on camera dragging his unconscious fiance after allegedly beating her, the star running back for the Baltimore Ravens was suspended for two games. The high media attention over the incident caused the NFL to revisit its domestic violence policies. Now players will receive a 6 game suspension for their first domestic offense, and a lifetime ban for any offense afterwards.
Washington Redskins
There has been constant debate over whether Washington's NFL team name of Redskins was culturally insensitive to Native Americans. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has refused to change the name of the team, arguing that it actually honors Native Americans. Recent polls indicate that there is a majority, albeit declining, of NFL fans who believe the team should not change their name. But with CBS Sports leaving it up to announcers whether they want to use the term Redskins or not, there is clearly momentum brewing for Washington to find a new team name.
Concussions
The NFL has received a lot of scrutiny in recent years after concussions have been shown to cause brain damage in current and former players. The NFL for decades tiptoed around the sensitive subject, but finally acknowledged in 2010 that many ex-players were suffering from Chronic traumatic encephalopathy. During the 2013-2014 season, the NFL had an independent neurological consultant on the sideline during every game. After lawsuits against the league and even against a team, the NFL has taken steps forward to address the concussion issue. But after Denver Broncos Wide Receiver Wes Welker took a hard concussion during the team's third preseason game, this issue will still be talked about through the season.
Peyton Manning
Peyton Manning broke records for single-season passing yards and touchdown passes during the 2013-2014 season. And if the Broncos beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII, Manning would be considered by many to be the greatest Quarterback ever to play the game. Yet the Broncos suffered an embarrassing loss to the Seahawks, with a staggering 43-8 defeat, derailing Manning's presumed title of "Greatest Ever." After his team's lackluster performance during the most watched television event in the world, you can be sure Manning will have a lot to prove this season.
Johnny Manziel
You've got to be good if your nickname is Johnny Football. But Johnny Manziel, the Cleveland Browns rookie QB, has received criticism over his hard-partying behavior despite his stellar Heisman winning college performance at Texas A&M. Manziel lost the starting QB start to Brian Hoyer, which doesn't mean that Manziel won't play any games this season. But if Manziel does pass at some point, all eyes will be on Cleveland as Johnny Football makes his real NFL debut.
Seattle Seahawks
They had the best defense in the league last year, and even after countless stellar performances during the regular season, very few people gave mind to the Seahawks when they entered Super Bowl XLVIII. But after a stunning blowout against the Broncos, the Seahawks claimed victory, with fans across the country now wondering if these birds will be able to fly again.
