Donations pour in for family of 7 in fatal Lower Chichester Twp. fire

LOWER CHICHESTER TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Donations have been pouring in for a family of seven dealing with the loss of a loved one and their home in a tragic fire in Lower Chichester Township, Delaware County.

Firefighters, EMTs, and first responders spent the day sorting, folding and accepting donations at the Lower Chichester Volunteer Fire Company, a day after the devastating blaze.

It was around 7:30 Saturday morning when a fire broke out inside a home on the 100 block of Fronefield Avenue.

62-year-old Doris Morgan, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, was trapped and died in the fire.

Her death marked the small township's first fire fatality since the early 70s.

"Nothing of this magnitude has happened in this community in a long time so to see the community pull together and stand up for this family in need is great," said Jeff Hill, Chichester Volunteer Fire Co.

Morgan's son-in-law Ahmad Martin, with the help of a neighbor, was able to rescue his children ages 8, 6, 5, 3 and 1.

Davar Rogers, Morgan's daughter, says her five nieces and nephews are all out of the hospital but her brother-in-law is still recovering from burns.

He risked his life to save his kids.

"He's so excited to try to tell his story about it but in the meantime he does have to relax he can get better," said Rogers.

On Sunday, Rogers was at the fire station to say, 'Thank you.' She couldn't believe her eyes - there were rows of necessities, toys for the holiday season and food for her sister's family.

"My heart is just going out to everyone - just so amazed by the response that came through just like that," said Rogers.

And they've come from all over the tri state to show the Martin children and their parents that they're not alone.

Lisa Meloni came from South Philadelphia to give her donation.

"We saw that story and it was very, very touching and we felt very strongly to come down here and help this family," said Meloni.

The Lower Chichester Volunteer Fire Department is now taking donations at 1540 Huddell Avenue.For more information click here

Many people expressed interest in wanting to make monetary donations. The family plans to open a bank account for that some time this week.

As for the cause of the fire, it is still under investigation.
