Fire destroys home in Lawrence Township, Mercer County

LAWRENCE TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- The street is still blocked off by police and gas crews Saturday night. The fire has been extinguished but the work is far from over.

Neighbor Kate Pogroszewski said, "It was like a bomb exploded. When I went outside, the house was smoking and it caught fire pretty quickly."

The 2-story home on the 700 block of Trumbull Avenue in Lawrence Township was destroyed.

Piles of ash and debris, the charred frame of the house are all that's left.

The couple inside were renovating their home and the new upgrades were almost complete.

"Instantly, it was huge and got over the whole house immediately," added neighbor

Peter Pogroszewski.

Neighbors say just before the heavy flames and smoke was a resounding boom throughout the neighborhood.

Thankfully, the couple inside were able to escape.

"He's okay, he got out in time. His wife got out in time too. They got a little bit burned and they took them to the hospital."

Firefighters from three fire companies worked for hours to extinguish all of the hotspots left over where the house stood.

Investigators are now focused on what remains of the house as they work to determine the cause of the fire.
