Standing at your desk is one of the hottest trends at the office right now. But is it really better for your body?

Standing at your desk is one of the hottest trends at the office right now. But is it really better for your body?

It's the latest trend in workplace wellness and touted as the healthier alternative to sitting.

"I stand about 50% of the time and sit about 50% of the time," said one employee.

ABC's Tory Johnson even goes one step further and uses a treadmill desk.

"I got this because it makes me focus better and makes me feel better about myself," said Johnson.

An estimated 70% of office workers spend more than five hours a day seated at their desks.

Experts say sitting for long periods of time can have damaging health affects, such as premature cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

"The benefit of a standing desk is you're already standing, you're burning about 20% more calories than if you were sitting. And in addition because you're already standing, you're probably more likely to be doing some additional subtle movements that burn even more calories," said Dr. Michael Jemsen from the Mayo Clinic.

But now, new information suggests the news about standing desks isn't all good.

"The potential negatives about standing too long include swollen feet, painful ankles, knees problems, primarily musculo-skeletal problems," said Dr. Michael Jemsen.

Experts say the bottom line is that balance is key.

"Sitting for a long time isnt great but standing for extended periods of time is not great either. What you want to do is break up your day sit a little stand a little walk a little stretch a little," said Michele Promaulayko Editor of Yahoo! Health.
