Philadelphia's Labor Day Parade highlights Harvey relief effort

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Union members from across the region gathered in South Philadelphia to celebrate Labor Day.

The Action Cam was there for the city's 30th Annual Labor Day Parade.

Marchers made their way north on Columbus Boulevard from the Sheet Metal Workers' Union Hall to the Great Plaza on Penn's Landing.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney was on hand to speak about the importance of union labor in the city and the nation.

"Your health benefits, your pension... all that is a result of the hard work of labor," said Kenney. "And all that stuff wasn't given away for free. It was fought in the coal mines, it was fought on the docks, it was fought everywhere in this country, and I think it's important we acknowledge that at least one day a year."

This year a tractor trailer was set up on the parade route to collect donations for the Hurricane Harvey relief effort.

People dropped off sacks of clothing, water, diapers, and more.

It will all be driven down to Texas by members of the Teamsters Union.
