Couple escapes injury after tree falls on SUV in Mt. Airy

MT. AIRY (WPVI) -- A couple escaped injury after a tree landed on their SUV as they were driving in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia.

A 30 to 40 foot tree fell on top of Paul Rabin's vehicle around 10:30 a.m. Monday as he was traveling down to 7300 block of McCallum Street.

"It is a very strange, sort of surrealistic experience," Paul said.

Paul and his wife Arlene Snyder, who was in the passenger seat, say it happened so fast there was really no time to react.

"I don't really remember if I heard the crack, but I saw in front, the tree was already falling. It seemed it was suspended horizontally," Paul said.

"My husband saw it coming, but it was so close, there was no way that he could stop, and it hit us. To think that hit us and we lived," Arlene said.

The couple from Boston didn't just walk away from this incident, they walked away with only a few scratches.

Paul says his car was ruined so he certainly doesn't feel lucky, but he is fully aware that this ordeal could've ended much worse.

"It smashed in the windshield and the front. I'm sure if it had been another foot or so farther back, it would have had a rather different outcome," Paul said.

Judging from the way the tree splintered, it was pretty dry inside, so it was either dead or dying.

"It didn't hit us. The tree did not hit us. It's a miracle," Arlene said.
