WILMINGTON (WPVI) -- Police say a suspected carjacker crashed into a DART bus in Wilmington, Delaware Wednesday morning.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, officers responded to a reported carjacking at 15 W. Lea Boulevard.

Police say the 23-year-old victim left his keys in the ignition of his 2003 Acura MDX and exited to use an ATM at the M&T Bank.

A suspect approached the victim, displayed a handgun, and forced the victim to turn over his cash.

He along with a second suspect then entered the victim's vehicle and fled the scene.

At approximately 5:50 a.m., officers on patrol observed the Acura driving erratically in the area of W. 33rd and Market streets.

Police say the SUV disregarded a stop sign at W. 35th and Washington streets and collided with a DART bus.

"They saw it operating erratically and tried to catch up to it, but by that point, the car had already collided with a DART bus," Wilmington Police Cpl. Mark Ivey said.

Timothy Joynes, the 44-year-old bus driver, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Wilmington Hospital for treatment. The single passenger, a 41-year-old female, was transported to St. Francis Hospital for minor injuries.

"I guess through the grace of God, I'm still walking. I managed to walk away from the bus. I was able to get out with just these minor injuries," Joynes told Action News when he returned to the scene after being released from the hospital.

The 20-year-old suspect driving the Acura was trapped inside the vehicle and was later extricated by the Wilmington Fire Department.

He was transported to Christiana Hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

"It appears the driver was operating at a high rate of speed when he ran that stop sign so we're just lucky no one was more seriously injured than they actually were," Ivey said.

While the name of the suspect has not been released, Action News is told he is a convicted felon on probation.

He remains in police custody and will face charges pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police have not released any further information on the second suspect.
