Drexel senior to play in US Open

It's a shot of a lifetime to play in the U.S. Open with the best golfers in world. And Bensalem native and Drexel golfer Christipher Crawford will get that shot next week.

Thanks to an incredible shot he made in qualifying Monday. Crawford sunk a 40-foot putt up hill on 18 to clinch it.

"You play golf your whole life, you always dream about playing in major championships, and now it's actually a reality," said Crawford. "Even saying that now is still hard to believe. It's a dream come true."

That dream will become a reality Thursday when they tee off for the 116th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, just outside Pittsburgh.

The 22-year-old senior is one of only 11 amateurs in the world to qualify.

"It will be very nerve-wrecking that first tee shot, and that first hole is hard enough without having the nerves so, you know, it will be fun," said Crawford.

Crawford is the first golfer in Drexel history to play in the U.S. Open. To make the cut, he says the key will be driving the ball well - and that's speaking from experience.

Crawford actually played Oakmont two years ago in an amateur tournament. But let's face it, it won't beat the U.S. Open.

"Having played Oakmont I think that, you know, if you're missing fairways you just don't have much of a chance," said Crawford.

Crawford is heading out there this weekend to start practicing, and he'll be joined by roughly 30 of his family, friends and teammates who will be cheering him on.
